On August 9, 2025, the Federal Government appointed Prof. Mathew Adamu as the Acting Vice‑Chancellor of the University of Abuja—recently renamed Yakubu Gowon University—effective Monday, August 11, 2025. He succeeds Prof. Patricia Manko Lar, who had held the acting position since February 2025 for six months. Prof. Adamu’s appointment duration is three months, during which he is expected to support the Governing Council, chaired by Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, to finalize the appointment of a substantive Vice‑Chancellor.
Distinguished veterinary scholar, having earned his DVM (1998) and MSc (2006) from the University of Maiduguri, and his PhD in Veterinary Surgery (2012) from the University of Pretoria.
Became a Fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria and attained full Professorship in 2019, specializing in Veterinary Parasitology & Entomology (Helminthology).
Extensive career spanning 27 years—includes roles as Youth Corps Veterinarian, private practice, researcher at NITR Kaduna, and lecturer at Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (now Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University).
Held leadership positions as Head of Department (2014–2018), Deputy Dean (2014–2016), Director of Veterinary Teaching Hospital (2018–2023), and Dean of the College (from 2023).
